sources

How are people getting their music these days? People have been harping on about the death of the CD for ages now, but what I'd like to know is what is your main 'source' for the music that you listen to?

Jazz/improv record stores in Toronto?

I visit Toronto, Ontario, Canada on a regular basis, but have never been able to find any decent record stores (new or used).

Can someone please help!

Downtown area is preferred but willing to travel too.

Les Stances A Sophie - AEC

If you've ever been curious about the film behind the soundtrack, it's now out on DVD (at least here in England) - released by Soul Jazz.

Essentially a bit of sub-par French cinema of the time telling a tale of ex-hippie adjusting to marriage to straight man. Snippets of AEC burst out from time to time (sounding a bit different to how I remember the record) and there's a brief performance. Also Joseph Jarman does a spot of acting (plays the part of a jazz musician - not wholly convincingly).

St Louis in the 1970s...

Sometimes coincidences happen...

Having a trawl round and came across a couple of new releases.

Luther Thomas and John Lindberg - Spirit of St Louis (Ayler download). Good to be reminded of how fine their music was back in those days.

James Marshall Human Arts Ensemble - Autonomous Oblast (cdbaby has it). Remembering those fine HAE self-releases (Under The Sun and Whisper of Dharma). Waiting for Postman Pat to bring this to me - but a quick blast from the onsite sample made it sound irresistible.

George Lewis - A Power Stronger Than Itself

Don't think I've seen this mentioned here.

Anyone interested in the history of the AACM really ought to check it out (University of Chicago Press).

Here are some more words to make up my quota.

Why does music REALLY remain out of print?

In the past year, my greatest musical revelation has been finally discovering the music of Marion Brown. I have listened to/purchased whatever my finances and the album's availability have permitted me to...I am naturally somewhat dismayed at the unavailability of the "Georgia Trilogy"- the Sweet Earth Flying, Afternoon for a Georgia Faun, and Gechee Recollections cds. I I know that free music lore is littered with romanticism of out of print gems, but from what I gather, this music is not some obscure document...many people seem to feel that it's Mr. Brown's greatest work.

record label question

hey all-
years ago i had a record label called ricecontrol. i'm gearing up to release records again. should i use the old name or a new one? i'm going to use the new one to promote concerts, but i'm tempted to roll it all up into one thing. that being said, part of me thinks i should keep the label name different from the promotion thing because i dont want the promotion thing to be instantly associated with me.

i'm not posting the name cos i don't want y'all laughing at me! ;)

Fire&Flux Returns/Transforms: New Label, New Releases, Reunion Show

Dear Freejazz.org Community,

I am writing to mention a number of new projects and with an update about some underground freejazz activities, transposed from NYC to central Illinois and Portland, OR.

I check this site weekly still, but I have not posted in some time, largely due to the arrival of my new baby, lovingly named Roscoe Mitchell, and other life business.

For years, I kept this community in touch with my NYC freejazz duo, Fire&Flux, which “adjourned” in the summer 2006 so that Ben and I could start new lives in different parts of the country.

Paul Rutherford post at D:O

Hi- some interesting duet stuff with Paul Rutherford/Paul Lovens from the early-ish days of the European improv scene up at Destination Out, www.destination-out.com, with some of my inchoate ramblings as an added bonus...
