for this one i'd say the proof is in the listening...

for example i do not hear a single solo on ornettes freejazz. i hear musicionas communcating and creating sound relationships and pathways.

someone else would say: are you nuts? listen to all those solos.

birds play composed music

Birds play composed music?

Many birds adapt their songs for the situation. Additionally, the lyrebird actually learns new sounds and incorporates them into its mating ritual. Anyone who has not heard a lyrebird is in for a treat. Saying that birds play composed music implies that someone composed the music. Bird songs are part of evolution; those bird songs that attract mates make an individual successful, but immense periods of time and evolution change those tunes, and there is more to successful mating in the bird world than their songs. Bird songs are a product of evolution (the composer) and their environment (the improvisational stimulus).

Never worked for me

Luckily, I'm with someone who likes my "bird song". Those who do are rare. Keep chirping, Phil. :)

Some excerpts from my own experience

Some excerpts from my own experience.

1) Can a player be an Accompanist in Free Music?

I played once in duo with Californian saxophonist Vinny Golia - he had tendency to lead, so I just let him do that and followed him. You may listen to this piece here - http://rstolyar.kroogi.com/content/show/22115

I participated in Denmark's Intuitive Music Conference in 2001 where we played some graphic scores - there were no leaders in performance, so everybody sounded like a part of Big Whole. That was great experience of collectivity in improvisation.

good example Massimo

Interesting example it was Brötzmann soloing and then Ken Vandermark comes in a definite accompanist type repetitive lower notes approach.
Brötzmann continues as he had been. Then Gustafson comes in half soloing and half accompanist playing the pulse but taking rhythmic rests between the pulses. Then they are all playing rhythmically for a moment, all in the accompanist role and then the main accompanist switches to Gustafson and Vandermark takes the solo. They then switch roles back and forth as duo, Brötzmann
dropping out and it evolves into a blurring line between accompanist and soloist or follower/leader-leader/follower.
This shows a good variety and we can observe several instances of
players in a free situation switching from support structure role to soloist role and back again.
