Listening to Free Jazz/Free Improvisation
the following was posted on the 'what content type?' explanatory page, a habit that doesn't endear you to moderators, and which i've put a stop to.

I would not like to start a discussion [sorry, Cyrille - phil], but rather participate on the listening-experience of the people who read the comments and care to comment.
The point is, I am mostly dedicated to Large Ensemble/Experimental Big Band/Creative Orchestra, which puts my CD-amount to near 60. Aside from that, I am always curious about small groups (duos to septet) and I own and hear some 200 CD's (some of them Postbop-Andrew Hill's Blue Note's, etc.).
But regarding new releases; there's some 30 to 40 labels that I know of, that put out at least in part Free Jazz/Free Improv. And the number of "Free" saxophonists alone is in an unbelievable range. I would encourage the readers of this website, to comment how they shift through new releases year by year. At this point, I have decided to buy CD's by artists (some Borah Bergman's Duo CD's,
Trio Music by Ivo Perelman, etc.) whose music I admire or instruments I like most, which are bass-clarinet, soprano and sopranino sax.).
Not to forget: listening time, spending money for music and space for music on the computer or in my case for CD's in my appartment, are limited.
I am grateful for whatever you feel to contribute.
the short horn
The Sopranino sax is a great instrument, I play a shiny (well, a little less shiny now) new(ish) Yanagisawa number. I'd be curious to know who your favourite 'nino players are..?
Sopranino Players
I like Vinny Golia (to be seen and heard from on his 20th Anniversary-DVD) a lot, also heard Kidd Jordan on this instrument on a Dennis Gonzales CD ("Debenge-Debenge": 2 sax, 2 tp, 2 ac. b, 2 dr!); Thomas Borgman on "Ride Into The Blue" with Borah Bergman and Peter Brötzmann.
Kidd Jordan on sopranino?
Kidd Jordan on sopranino? I'm going to have to check that out.
I also heard that there is a Yusef Lateef sopranino album around somewhere but I've never been able to find it....
I've been listening to some
I've been listening to some of the "Post-Vandermark" jazz from Chicago, and particularly like the new album by Josh Berman, "Old Idea". He plays cornet, but the sax player, Keefe Jackson, is also quite good, IMO. The liner notes compare it to "Out to Lunch", and generally speaking, I think that's fairly accurate. Jackson has several solo albums, all with Berman on cornet, which I also like.
I usually buy music based on
I usually buy music based on the instrumentation. I look for the horn first. Then I check if it's a small or large band (I prefer small groups). Then I check what country it's from (I usually prefer American music). That said, it can be pretty random alot of the time. If I pick something up that looks interesting I'll buy it. Think that's how it works for most people.
Also regarding the sopranino, I really like Anthony Braxtons' playing. Kaoru Abe too. Actually I've never heard anyone else playing this instrument. I love it's sound. It's more like a double reed than the soprano.
Speaking of double reeds, Sonny Simmons' cor anglais playing is beautiful.
