Freejazz.org sampler volume two

the original sampler thread has gone all messy, posts about the two volumes are all mixed up together, and not all the postings survived the transfer, so we're starting again here. the old thread can be read here.

if you're new to the site, the sampler is where the regular denizens of freejazz.org walk their walk: it pulls together tracks contributed by us, and presents them to the world www.freejazz.whi music.co.uk

comments please, about the sampler as a whole, about individual tracks, whatever...

Artwork

i've done a sleeve for volume two of the sampler, which you'll find on the website. it's basically a pdf and a jpg for each disk, for the paper parts and the label respectively, so listeners can turn the MP3's into finished CD's if they want, and participants can make copies for reviewers or to sell at gigs.

rabbits from hats

very nice phil,
I don't know what I was expecting, but those expectations were shattered,

what is that image on the front?

lovely, whatever it is....

image

Glenn sent a design based on an aerial photo, which he said he liked cos it reminded him of a circuit board, so i combined it with a shot of my (recently deceased) motherboard, and smeared it so the joints weren't too obvious. Glenn likes it, anyway...

King Suryavarman Digs It

--- Glenn likes it, anyway...

For this project, when sifting through the contributions I was really struck by how the artists brought so many vibrant new ideas and sounds that blended all time-sense: past, present and future.

It was to my mind's ear emblematic of the state of freejazz in general.

I was trying to come up with some imagery for the disc which blended the past and the future, the organic and the synthetic.

This dovetailed nicely with an recent interest of mine, finding ways in which the infrastructure of civilization and nature mirrors circuit boards and such.

So I came up with this satellite view of Angkor Wat in Cambodia and was blown away by how much it resembled a circuit board.

However, my skills for making it happen were rather rudimentary.

Enter Phil H. stage left: We emailed ideas and eventually I shipped the images off to maestro Phil and he ran with it producing the stunning art work now available for download.

And there it is...

sampler to STN

a copy of the sampler is now on its way to Signal to Noise..hopefully it will get some ink before vol. 3 rolls around..

SPARK TRIO-Tidal wave

If you listen to tidal wave by the spark trio on freejazz sampler 2

the first part solo sax part is centered on Ab, the 2nd pentatonic mode of and containing the same notes as GbM pentatonic

here's a simple repeating figure that works over (or under) the beginning solo sax part:

played in the very fast tempo (of the sax) 4/4, four measures per trill

two note trills:
TRILLS:

1) [Gb (down to) Db ] - Gb Db Gb Db Gb Db etc.

2) down to [Eb (down to ) Bb] - Eb Bb Eb Bb Eb Bb

3) then up to [Ab (up to) Db2] - Ab Db2 Ab Db2 Ab Db2

repeat

***************************************************************

a new note that comes in later in the piece is g natural which can also be used as an accidental in a bassline later on in the piece or even from the in the beginning:

Bb down to Ab up to Db (repeat total of 3 times) then add the g natural below Bb
thus:

Bb Ab Db -
Bb Ab Db -
Bb Ab Db G..

repeat

use Ab dorian + low g for melody

(piece starts off sus pentatonic mode then changes to minor mode later)

care to do that with my

care to do that with my piece, Doc?

Dual Emisson

I'm hearing the notes of Bb Major but rooted on A (locrian mode)

A Bb C D Eb F G A

use two chords play the first one once and the second twice, repeat

1) F Bb C Eb (F sus7)

up to
2) C Eb F D

********************************************************************
bassline: C Bb A (4/4)

( C down to- Bb down to- A )

......... C ............Bb .......A ......rest
1/4+1/8.........1/8......1/4.....1/4

food for thought

thanks

just had a play-along to

just had a play-along to this with acoustic guitar.. 'bassline' played with descending fourths chords (C/F.. Bb/Eb.. A/D) using plenty of open strings fitted beautifully in a Breton-folk kinda way with the sax; not a bad diversion on a sunny afternoon over a cupa coffee...

cheers Dr.C

patois

sounds good
You might also like to try playing in D minor over Lee Noyes' guitar track called "Catch Fire" at the Cadavre Equis site, perhaps tuning the guitar to open D minor tuning: D A D F A D

add Db to the scale at either end

nom de guerre

tee hee... sorry for any confusion, but i think i'll leave that for a while before i attempt any layer since it was me who submitted the seed ;-) tho' i'm sure your suggestion of an open tuning is sound and worthy of exploration...

cheers,

patois I see who you are

you are he

you could be the first to layer over yourself
there's nothing wrong with that
Begravius is the only activity I see now

Dem Changes

"a copy of the sampler is now on its way to Signal to Noise..hopefully it will get some ink before vol. 3 rolls around.."

thanks - anyone else sending off review copies, let us all know, so that you can bask in the warm glow of appreciation from us all, and so we don't duplicate efforts anywhere.

sampler sounds

Time for the next one..the nostalgia sounds are beautiful...but so are the new sounds.

this week's news

this week's news, though, is that the Cadavre Esquis sampler is imminent; i'm fully expecting the online version to be ready this week, with hard copies to follow. i know that you haven't personally dipped a toe in that water, Mr Moshe, but lots of folk you know have. all the feedback i've had for the compiled version has been positive, so i think you'll enjoy it.

new sounds

Man..i'm ready to dip in the next sound pond!
I didn't have the right hook up before..but i definitely wanted to be involved for sure..

lastfm

i've put both volumes of the sampler onto lastfm, something i probably should have done a while ago, but you know how it is. several of you are there before me, i notice - any feedback on it?

nice one phil

this is a good move, I think (even though I've yet to notice even 1 (!) listener to the track I put up there)

it's a good way to see who is listening to us though, and what other things they like. That way we know if we've popped up in someone's iTunes on shuffle, scared the living daylights out of their friends at a party and been instantly turned off, or if we're really being listened to.
