Steve Coleman's "No Freedom in Music" Approach

I'm relatively new to the sounds and auras of "free jazz" (plus free improv, avant-garde, experimental and even noise), so I've been toying with theories and concepts for the past few days. Thus, if any subsequent comments I make in response seem somewhat ignorant, I apologize.

I had read this interview with Steve Coleman of M-BASE notoriety about his music and his philosophy (http://www.m-base.com/int_volz.html). One of the excerpts was about playing with Dave Holland. In his own words:

Milford Graves

I just saw the comment by Patois, which mentioned Milford. I understand he is still teaching at Bennington College, but has anyone news of him performing or recording?

Coming Through the US and Canada

Bruce Percy, guitarist and improviser extraordinaire, from Brisbane, Australia, will be travelling through the US and Canada in June. He will be in New York from the 12th to the 21st of June, and if any of the fine citizens of the US and Canada who post here could come forward with any suggestions/opportunities for performances I'm sure Bruce would very much appreciate it.

He can be contacted at bruce.percy@aanet.com.au

Daoud Haroon

Does anyone have news of recent activity by Daoud, a trombonist active in the 60s/70s ? He appeared, for example, on a recording (Una Muy Bonita) by Earl Cross and Jimmy Vass.

Marion Brown

I read on freejazz.org that Marion is still with us (living in a nursing home) - does anyone have contact details for him? I would like to send him my best wishes.

New Trumpet Voices

Very taken with the video clip of the quartet on Forbes Graham's site.

Also heard a little from Tom Arthurs yesterday - not heard of him before (tonality very reminiscent of Bill Dixon).

Comments?

Any other recommendations?

Dave Carey's Swing Shop

Nostalgia Corner: Does anyone remember "Dave Carey's Swing Shop" of Streatham (London, UK)? I bought my first two free-jazz albums (vinyl) there in the 60's - by Pharoah Sanders (on ESP) and "Fate in a pleasant mood" by Sun Ra (on Saturn).

Mario Schiano

Mario Schiano, saxophonist and improviser, the father of Free Jazz in Italy, passed today (May 10, 2008) at the age of 75. I know that most of non-italian people here are not familiar with his name or his huge musical production, but for Italian improvisers he has always been a true point of reference.
He played with Sam Rivers, Peter Kowald, Ernst Rejsiger, Famoudou Don Moye and many other american and european musicians.
Ciao Mario
R.I.P. Maestro

MP3 blog question

Hello all-
Does anyone know of mp3 blogs that review newer music? I'm somewhat familiar with ones that unearth forgotten gems and try to let the people know about artists that are more obscure. What about ones that are working with music being released right now.

Thanks for your help
