Dick Bowman

Thought you'd like to know that Dick is no longer moderating freejazz.org: he felt it was time to move on, after five years at the helm (or thereabouts), although his words of wisdom will continue to adorn the site, i'm assured.

I imagine you'd like to join me in thanking him for all he's done for freejazz.org over those years.

St Louis in the 1970s...

Sometimes coincidences happen...

Having a trawl round and came across a couple of new releases.

Luther Thomas and John Lindberg - Spirit of St Louis (Ayler download). Good to be reminded of how fine their music was back in those days.

James Marshall Human Arts Ensemble - Autonomous Oblast (cdbaby has it). Remembering those fine HAE self-releases (Under The Sun and Whisper of Dharma). Waiting for Postman Pat to bring this to me - but a quick blast from the onsite sample made it sound irresistible.

Free Jazz Transcriptions

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows of any transcriptions of Free Jazz artists?
Ayler, Pharoah... any of the harsher players I guess.

On the broader issue, anyone have any opinions on transcriptions in general?
While I think it's better to do it by ear, I definately think it's a good idea to learn from your heroes one way or the other. I'd love to know what these guys are playing but my ear just aint fast enough !

Thanks and best wishes,
Paddy Irishman

As it's July 1st, i've compiled the download stats for whi music's first six months of the year. And as many of you are involved in the creative endeavours documented therein, i thought i'd share them with you.

Firstly, Cadavre Esquis: 10.6Gb. That's the equivalent of 175 CD's worth.

Free Jazz sampler one: 2.7Gb (33 CD's worth)

Free Jazz Sampler two: 4.1Gb (29, tho it's a double, so you could say 58)

Blind Chaos Free Dada: 44 downloads (these titles now are mixed MP3 format and FLAC, so the Gb figures aren't indicative)

Friday Morning Everywhere: 68 downloads

RESISTANCE BLUE DUO: Need Milwaukee Date

Greetings!

The Resistance Blue Duo is going on the road in August.

We are looking for a venue in the Milwaukee area on August 23 or 24.

We are Ben Karetnick, percussion, and Jeremy "Phloyd" Starpoli, trombone.

Be in touch if you have or know of a place to play, including punk shows, clubs, coffee houses, etc.
We don't discriminate ;)

Practicing intervals

Hi Free Jazz community,
I hope you're all doing well and that you're playing and listening often. I haven't posted for a while because I've been wood shedding, marketing, and performing, but I have developed a useful and fun way for studying intervals that I’d like to share.

I'm focusing on being able to play any note, followed by any other note on the horn. I developed this idea using one of Londeix's books about intervals. If I play my low Bb (Bb3 on soprano saxophone), I want to be able to play any other note on my horn quickly and in tune.

Vision Festival Reports?

Anybody go? Anything to say? Anything else happen simultaneously?

Unexpected travel problems kept me away this time around. I'd really like to know how things were. Was the venue better/worse than earlier years?

As I looked over the programme I felt that they'd missed an opportunity for parallel sessions of "big names in the big room" and "up-and-comers in the other".

Did Guiseppi Logan put in an appearance?

George Lewis - A Power Stronger Than Itself

Don't think I've seen this mentioned here.

Anyone interested in the history of the AACM really ought to check it out (University of Chicago Press).

Here are some more words to make up my quota.

Kidd Jordan on NPR

I caught a piece on Kidd Jordan on NPR(!) yesterday. Pretty sweet that he might get heard a little bit by a wider audience. Not so sweet that it took 50 years. Here's the url: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=91384626.

Also, the samples they played on the air were by no means his most fiery which means he was somewhat misrepresented because he is usually in that burning mode of his. Can't really complain though because it's cool that they covered him at all.

Harold McNair

A friend of mine is confused whether Harold was born in Kingston (Jamaica) or in Kingston (Surrey, UK). Does anyone in freejazz-space have the definitive answer to this one?
